In Paris, I wandered into the Museum of Modern Art, which had no visitors except me at the time. This museum is not on most tourist lists. ( I believe in French it is the Musee d’Arte Moderne). I went down to the lower level gallery, which didn’t even have a guard posted, and found the most marvelous Rouault Exhibition. I had never been a great fan, but this vis-a-vis experience with the work certainly converted me.
I have done a lot of monoprints/monotypes and although I don’t remember ever seeing any Rouault monotypes, I would say that this one looks very much like a Rouault. It is really beautiful and I am very happy for you. I studied printmaking with Claire Romano at the New School and viscosity printing with Krishna Reddy at NYU. I have been a painter for many years.
I agree with the above sentiments and believe the aquatint to be a genuine Rouault.
I am happy to know there are still painters out there and that connoisseurs also continue to appreciate this great artist.
In closing it is worthwhile to note Rouault’s early apprenticeship to a stained glass maker, which in part accounts for his bold, luminous colors and superb lines.
