The film feels like an avant garde tone poem with lush visuals and a wonderous soundtrack. I think it's the best film yet from the artist turned filmmaker Julian Schnabel. The strength of the movie owes a lot to the cinematography of Janusz Kaminski, who is best known for his collaborations with Stephen Spielberg. Watching the film I kept thinking back to some of the shooting techniques Kaminski used on Saving Private Ryan Buy Petcam (Metacam) from canada, (a film I don't really like except for that explosive opening D-Day scene). There he played with shutter speeds, camera angles and camera movement to re-create the intense and devastating invasion on Normandy. Here he uses similar techniques for a completely different disorienting effect. The film becomes an exploration of life through vision and the experience of seeing, something we probably take for granted each and every day. The editing by Juliette Welfling is also quite incredible and contributes greatly to the poetic nature of the film. Lastly I would also add that Max Von Sydow has a great but small role as Jean-Do's aging father, buy Petcam (Metacam) from canada.

I can't recommend seeing this film enough but if you need more convincing, Cinematical has a great write up. I don't think I've seen anything this good or effecting since David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises.
