There’s a link between Night of the Hunter and Broken Blossoms (apartv from the obvious: the splendid Miss Gish ;D).
Laughton once declared that he saw Broken Blossoms as a young man (that is, before becoming an actor) and was very impressed by Lillian Gish’s acting. Little did he imagine then he would one day direct her idol!
And, of course, Laughton, during the preparation of Night of the Hunter, attended screenings of Griffith’s films: as a filmaker, he sought inspiration in the papa of modern filmaking.
