When I was living in France, someone said to me that I photographed the light. I didn’t get what he meant by that so I asked him to explain, and he went on to say that in my pictures, as far as he could see, it seemed as though the people, who ought to have been my subjects, were incidental to the light I’d caught them in.
When I told this story to someone else a few years later, they said it was an insulting critique, but it hadn’t bothered me because I thought the guy might have had a point?
Anyway, I don’t mean to compare myself to Crewdson but, given the complexity his lighting set-ups – his high production values? – plus the anecdote above, could it be that Crewdson is a ‘photographer of the light’?
