in Germany women get paid leave for a year and they can take two additional years off – unpaid. What a luxury to know your job is waiting for you. My impression is that this creates much happier families and more importantly more durable families (I am basing this on observing my friends and family there and here).
I have seen friends here throw in the towel after a few years, especially f children are involved. I suspect the lack of support for the family here just creates too much of a pressure cooker.
Oh and another perk? Germany pays “Kindergeld” – a modest amount of state support to help you feed the child) for each child you have until they turn eighteen.
In New York we can barely even count on sending kids to public school.
Don’t get me wrong, I love it here and I do think there is still more opportunity for people here. But one can hope for balance.
oh and Sweden is pretty awesome
I’m in Norway now and have def. noticed that there are lots of young fathers pushing the stroller (without a mom around). I think it’s the norm here for the mom to first take about 9 months off, and then the dad takes 9 months off, paid (not sure what the percentage is but was told it’s close to full pay). I do think it makes it easier for the father to play a more responsible and equal role in the raising of the child. The government’s policy nurtures the family, which I think is wonderful.
