no, colorized flowers is not a tired subject
I do agree that flowers as subject matter has been used to the point where there really isn’t anything you can do with them anymore that hasn’t already been done. However, I do enjoy the top photos by Thomas Hauser, the way he references historical still-lives, but adding in the dieing flowers to give it a contemporary edge. As far as Sam Falls photos go, it doesn’t quite have the requirements for me personally to get involved with the work. While the bottom photo has it’s interesting concepts about it, the top photo leaves me thinking of a typical Hallmark card, or something. Overall, great work though.
Anyone that has taken an art history class, been to a museum or picked up a book that feature photos, could probably agree that flowers have been subject matter for a very long time. So should we stop taking photos of them?… to that I say, we have been doing the same with people, pets, babies, nature of all kinds, and so on… so do we stop that too, no! We won’t ever stop, and finding a new way to be creative with the subject matter is the best way to continue with a subject that is so widely used in time. From the two photographers, I feel, that the work by Thomas Hauser is the more successful of the two. I feel that because he incorporated old with what is natural, is what makes it most successful.
