Unbelievable. I spent hours looking for a reference source for movie fonts after watching a brilliant cheeseball 1940s comedy on TCM and found NOTHING. Thank you so so much for posting this…

I’m really into using text in my work, and I often think about how much styles of fonts and how texts are written have changed over the years. The ‘Sunset Blvd.’ really has a 1950′s feel to it, it’s amazing how you can seem to see and feel these differences simply from text and the style it’s written in. Looking over the Movie Title Stills Collection was really interesting and fun. I hope that now realizing how the choice and placing of a text can determine the picture’s time era, that I can use that to further expand a setting in my own work.

    Hi O.W.,

This is great, almost a guilty pleasure. It makes me want to hunt down some great title cards as well. What do you think of the common practice now of putting titles only at the end of films now? (Avatar comes to mind).

Unrelated, but cinema related, I am compiling a list of films that reference my hometown Fresno. It’s a strange beast: “Grapes of Wrath” to “Airplane II: The Sequel” to “Twelve Monkeys”
