I carried around Pictures From Home in college everywhere I went for an entire semester and had to pay hefty late fees for not returning it to the library. He was the first photographer I truly cared about, and it’s really nice to hear that other people had the same experience. Really sad news.
Pictures From Home was my first photography book. It was a huge inspiration. When I attended SFAI Larry lectured to our class. He was very charismatic and had great stories about his work and the importance of making the work you want to make, not what you think you’re supposed to make. He will be missed.
The photo of Sultan’s father is a near perfect match with the figure skater below. By plan or chance?
Larry Sultan had a wonderful way to invite us into his home and show us his personal life. He had a very elegant use of lighting and that made the colors dance in our eyes. In the image above, he has created a comical scene, which I feel, wasn’t intended but is certainly entertaining.
