Avedon, Our Fathers, And Horses Really Do Think

Jacob Israel Avedon, December 19, 1972
By Richard Avedon
I recently watched
Darkness and Light, the American Masters series documentary on
Richard Avedon. It was definitely an insightful and inspiring look into a great mind and image maker. In the documentary, Avedon talks about the tough time he had communicating with his father. The elder Avedon couldn't appreciate his son's photographs nor could he see the beauty contained with in them. It seems that his father could only communicate with him by talking about money and business.
This immediately got me thinking about my relationship with my father as it's pretty much the same. I get a call from my father every other week or so and the basic questions are related to work, success, and money. I get frustrated but I know that he wants the best for me no matter what. Unfortunately he sees everything in financial terms as well. What all this has to do with horses I really can't say except that "don't think, horses think" was the standard response from my father everytime he asked us a question and we answered that we were "thinking about it." That saying of his always stuck with me even though I'm still not sure what it means.
