Interesting how none of the Hoppers are for sale, but all of the photographs are

  2. Lily says:

Actually, I understand there are a number of Hopper drawings that are for sale and that some of the photographs are available and some are not.
I am sure there are good reason for all of this. Maybe it isn’t all about selling, but more about looking and thinking.

I believe the Times article explains how the paintings were acquired by one collector over a long time and the gallery wanted to bring them to the public eye and to further this discussion about: the paintings, photography, influence (direct and otherwise). Hat’s off. A show of this magnitude raises the bar, that’s for sure.

  3. Grace says:

The paintings were loaned for the exhibition and once you see them in person you would understand why no collector in his right mind would consider selling them. Besides when was the last time you saw a really great Hopper painting for sale.

I too would have loved to see this exhibition. With the iconic photographs of Lee Friedlander and the drawings of Edward Hopper, this must have been an amazing show. I’ve always admired Friedlander’s dramatic style. His stark contrast of the urban cities of America have shown an interesting view into its culture. Hopper’s drawings of similar architecture and residents show very different aspect. I would have loved to see this two artist’s works side by side.
